In 2013, I was invited to Montevideo, Uruguay, by a hostel owner. He offered to trade me room and board for a custom mural outside his business. After completing the mural, I started an impromptu community initiative to beautify the surrounding area. What I found most inspiring about this project was the connections I made with the people of Ciudad Vieja, despite speaking little Spanish. We understood each other through the international language of visual communication.
